Birdwatching field tour

Birdwatching field tour

Northern Patagonia region presents abundance of birdlife, records show more than 140 different species, divided in three main categories: Steppe, forest and aquatic.

Florencia Macini is our specialist in this activity. She will pick you up early in the morning and take you for a full day field excursion into the Meliquina region. We will drive to the Magellanic Forest in Lanin National Park. We will have the chance to see several endemic species and typical bird families that exist in the sub antarctic region. Some examples are the Magellanic woodpecker or the Campephilus magellanicus.

Other alternative in the area is the Chapelco highland. Many species arrive from the Puna (northern, high Andean plains) during the summer, and it is only possible to see them by ascending to the high mountains areas. There we have the chance to see condors (vulture gryphus), ground – tyrants, sierra finches, among others.

We will head back to the lodge during the evening, with enough time to groom yourself before dinner.

Florencia is a biologist and university teacher. She lives in San Martín de los Andes (Patagonia) since 1999. She is an active member of a local non-profit, non-governmental conservation organization (Asociación Conservación Patagónica) and worked in several environmental education programs, including birding with elementary schools.
In San Martín de los Andes she collaborates as a guide in ALAS Project where biologists, teachers, and children recognize and value the different local ecosystems, through the birdwatching.
