Seven Lakes road
If you want to take a day of fishing and take a day tour around northern patagonia, you must visit the Seven Lakes Road. This road is the most emblematic sightseeing drive in Patagonia, it joins the town of San Martin de los Andes and Villa La Angostura across the heart of the Lakes District, across the Lanin and Nahuel Huapi National Parks.
The road is a 107 km (66,5 miles) long stretch part of the National Route 40 (that stretches from south to north, from Ushuaia, to la Quiaca), where you will be able to meet the typical characteristics of the Patagonian Andes region, green woods, snowed peaks, and several lakes. During the Autumn season, colors change for an incredible show of reds, yellows and oranges. As you drive south, you will notice a marked change of vegetation and surroundings.
We will start our tour departing from the city of San Martin de los Andes heading south. Just a couple of minutes after our journey starts, we will reach our first milestone: “Arroyo Partido”.
There is something that makes this creek unique in the world: it’s not only part of two hydrographic basins, but also it ends in two different oceans which makes it part of the Continental Divide. These are waters from a water spring on the top of Cerro Chapelco that forms a small creek flowing west until it reaches the road where it bumps against a bunch of rocks. Right there it divides in two different streams, one flowing to the Atlantic, and the other one to the Pacific.
Back to the road, and continuing our way south, we will find several sightseeing stops and trails inside the seven lakes road, but not any as the Ñivinco Falls. This is a short walk, just minutes away from Villa La Angostura that has become popular during the summer season for a good reason.
Leaving the trail, and back on the road further south, we will reach Villa La Angostura on the north-west shores of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. This small mountain village (that keeps growing day by day) had its beginnings as an agricultural cologne. Not much is left from that time. Now it vibrates with beautiful hotels, gourmet restaurants and the spectacular views of Lakes Nahuel Huapi and Correntoso. It’s the perfect place for Lunch with a view. We will visit some of its beautiful bays, maybe Cerro Belvedere, and perhaps a boat ride with Captain Ernesto on his sailboat.
